The popular singer/songwriter is once again making headlines (and making music) with a new cd (The Greatest Songs of the Fifties), a long-running hit show in Las Vegas at the Las Vegas Hilton (Music and Passion), and a PBS television Special (filmed during one of his Las Vegas performa
nces). It’s all exciting, and it’s all wonderful (especially for those of us who have been Manilow fans since the days when he played piano for Bette Midler), but it’s the show, and the live performance by one of America’s greatest and most prolific singer/songwriters that’s the big winner. And it’s a “must-see” for any self-respecting gay boy bent on a Vegas vacation.
The show, “Manilow: Music and Passion” is a multi-faceted production featuring contemporary music, lights and special effects, all made even more spectacular by Barry Manilow himself, his cast and the members of his band. It’s a classic Las Vegas mega-production, but the style and the emotion is all Barry Manilow. It’s intimate, despite being in a 1,700 seat theatre, and the music, always personal, whether tugging a
t your heart strings or tugging you onto the dance floor, is filled with energy, and changes a bit with every performance. Manilow himself says, in describing the show, that “I’ve always avoided a ‘fixed’ show that repeated the same thing every night.. I’m glad that the Las Vegas Hilton and “Music & Passion” have given us all the chance to surprise the audience every night.”
Manilow: Music and Passion first opened at the Las Vegas Hilton on February 23rd, 2005. It was a great follow-up to Manilow’s sold-out 2004 “One Night Live! One Last Time!” which played to more than 250,000 fans in 23 arenas throughout the United States and the United Kingdom. A year later, the show is still playing to sold out audiences, and its run has been extended well into 2007. Again, If your plans take you to Vegas, this is one show you won’t want to miss.
